Alcohol Countermeasure Systems announces artificial intelligence (AI) based technologies for assessment of fitness to drive, notably, an early warning system using eye tracking information for detection of drowsiness and fatigue in drivers.
Leveraging its advanced in-house research laboratory equipped with driving simulator and multimodal data acquisition technologies, ACS has invested extensively in research and development of scientifically validated methods for non-intrusive evaluation of driving impairment. In this regard, ACS has continued collaboration and investments with Canadian universities to integrate the cutting edge knowledge into its products.
Driver fatigue is the leading risk factor in non-drug impairment and is associated with over 25% of motor vehicle crashes resulting in injury or death. Drowsiness has a detrimental influence on driving performance, reducing alertness, increasing reaction time and causing cognitive deficits. It is also difficult to assess and is often under reported in traffic crash analysis.
ACS group of scientists has worked with Canadian universities to develop a non-intrusive, in-vehicle driver fatigue monitoring system that has been scientifically validated. Advanced machine learning and deep learning techniques have been adopted for development of reliable drowsiness detection systems in drivers using eye tracking information. There is a high correspondence between the performance of these eye tracking based methodologies with behavioural and physiological objective measures of vigilance. The short time-window required for extraction of eye tracking information together with the non-intrusive nature of these techniques make them ideal for long-term, real-time monitoring of driver status.
Starting as a research division in 1976, ACS successfully developed a technological solution to prevent impaired driving and has worked closely with legislators, regulators, as well as research and advocacy institutions for many decades to improve road safety. This continued investment with leading Canadian universities will enable us to leverage research and introduce new products to support changing legislation and tools for law enforcement agencies.
